Bringing poverty awareness with HatsOnDufferin

September 19, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – An organization in Dufferin County is bringing poverty awareness to the forefront this November by donating winter hats to those in need.

HatsOnDufferin is a non-profit organization whose goal is to ensure that every child, person and family in Dufferin County has a hat to keep them warm this winter. HatsOnDufferin hopes that this initiative will raise awareness to otherwise unknown and unchecked poverty issues in the county.

HatsOnDufferin began as a social gathering of individuals with a passion for crocheting and quickly evolved into a socially responsible, community minded initiative.

HatsOnDufferin hopes that their initiative will increase poverty awareness and help support other community minded poverty initiatives. The group plans to donate 150 hand crocheted and knitted hats to every school in Dufferin County in recognition of Canada 150. Once the schools have the opportunity to distribute hats to students in need, the remaining hats will be collected and donated to Dufferin County community partners.

HatsOnDufferin has the goal of making 4350 hats by early November for distribution to the schools. Those wishing to help knit or crochet hats can do so by donating completed hats to Healing Moon in Orangeville or by donating unused yarn. To find HatsOnDufferin events, please visit their events webpage.

Hundreds of volunteers have been hard at work making hats and any help from the community would be appreciated so they can reach their goal.

The winters in Dufferin may be cold, but the hearts, hands and generosity of residents will always be warmer. For more information about HatsOnDufferin, please visit their website.
