Brisbane PS holds second annual Plastic Bag Grab challenge

June 6, 2017

ERIN, Ontario – Brisbane Public School held its second annual Plastic Bag Grab challenge last week. Schools across the country are involved in this challenge every year.

In Canada, more than one billion plastic bags are handed out each year. By participating in the challenge, Canadian students learn to reduce, reuse and recycle by collecting used plastic bags for recycling. Last year, the challenge was so successful it saw 419 Canadian schools participate by collecting over two million bags. The bags were then recycled, made into small pellets and repurposed into a variety of new products.

Last year, Brisbane Public School collected 6,812 plastic bags and this year the school collected almost half the amount with 3,456 bags being collected. The school saw this as a great success because it showed students and staff that the Brisbane community is not using as many plastic bags as they did the previous year.

Students were eager to collect bags and help the environment. The school recently attended the Earth Keepers program at Island Lake with Loon, Lynn Picard. There, they learned how to share their knowledge on how to care for the environment. Two teachers in the school organized the Plastic Bag Grab challenge. Students from all grades were involved in collecting bags.

Students made posters, shared announcements and collected bags over a week at the school. The bags were delivered to Walmart for recycling on June 5. For more information about the Plastic Bag Grab challenge, please visit: http://www.plasticbaggrab.com/.
