GCVI music puts out first album since 1976

June 15, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute’s music program is putting out their first album since 1976.

For the past three years, GCVI bands and choirs have qualified for the provincial finals of the Kiwanis Festival, when a group qualifies for the festival they are required to submit a recording of their group. As a result, the school has several professional grade recordings from the music program.

The album will feature recordings from 2015 to 2017 of the GCVI Symphonic Band, GCVI Stage Band and the GCVI Chamber Choir. It will feature six stage band tracks, five symphonic band tracks and five chamber choir tracks. The work of over 200 students from the school will be heard on the album. The album artwork and track mastering was completed by students in the senior music program.

According to Daniel Austin, music teacher at the school, “There were two main motivations for putting the album out this year. The first is that we finally have enough tracks to fill a full album. We have been posting the tracks each year on our soundcloud account so students could access them, but this is the first time we have had enough to fill a full CD’s worth of music. The second reason is that we have one of our strongest graduating classes ever. About 25 students are graduating from the bands and choirs this year. These students are some of the strongest and most dedicated students we have ever had, and they have been at the core of all the music projects we have done in the past 4-5 years.”

The album is scheduled to be released later this week and will be sold by the school for $20.00. All profits from the album sales will be used to fund future projects for the GCVI bands and choirs. Those interested in purchasing the album are asked to contact Austin at [email protected].
