GUELPH, Ontario – It was a beautiful day for a big birthday celebration.

On Friday, the students and staff at William C. Winegard Public School celebrated the 93rd birthday of the school’s namesake, Dr. William C. Winegard.

Students gathered with Dr. Winegard outside the school to sing to him “Happy Birthday” – a tradition that the school has carried on since its opening in 2014.

He asked the children if he could come back on his 94th birthday – “Every year!” they responded.

Dr. Winegard is a World War II veteran, a former President of the University of Guelph, a former Member of Parliament, and a recipient of the Order of Canada. He is a very special guest at the school and often makes regular visits to the school to read to kindergarten classes.
