This year, Upper Grand DSB board and school staff groups have continued organizing and participating in book studies, focusing on furthering learning in anti-racism and anti-oppression.

One staff book study that just wrapped up is Decolonizing Education: Nourishing the Learning Spirit by Marie Battiste. This book is recommended for all folks working in the school system. Battiste “documents the nature of Eurocentric models of education, and their devastating impacts on Indigenous knowledge.”

For those looking for additional book recommendations in Indigenous ways of knowing, some recommendations include:

  • Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call by Arthur Manuel
  • Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer
  • 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act: Helping Canadians Make Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples a Reality by Bob Joseph
  • All Our Relations: Finding the Path Forward by Tanya Talaga

Do you have a book recommendation focusing on Indigenous education and knowledge? Send your recommendation to the UGDSB Equity Team via [email protected] with the subject line “Recommended Reading.”
