A Thank You And Updates For Next Week

Posted September 24, 2021

I wanted to take a moment and say thank you to our Alma PS students and staff for your support with the unplanned power outage today.  Students were calm and pivoted quickly.  Staff did an amazing job of looking after the personal needs of our students.  Our septic system was in the midst of receiving some upgrades today and those upgrades could not be finished by the end of the day due to the power outage.  Those upgrades will continue on Monday morning.  Our systems should be up and running but the Board will be leaving the portable toilets on-site just in case they are needed for Monday as well.

We have a few exciting updates to share.  Ms. Brown has joined our team officially in the role of EA.  She’s done a great job of supporting student needs in a transitional role and we are pleased to keep her on our team moving forward.  As well, today Mrs. Robinson has been hired as our new Kindergarten teacher and will partner with Mrs. Harrop starting on Tuesday.  Mr. Childs has done an amazing job of filling in and will finish up with our kindergarten class on Monday.  Mrs. Robinson brings with her a lot of experience in the kindergarten role and we are grateful to have her on our team.  We also will be adding an additional two afternoons of planning time support in our kindergarten and resource roles.  Once this hiring is complete I will let families know about this new staff member as well.  We are blessed to be a growing community, and it will be exciting to see what the year ahead brings.

Next week is an important week across the UGDSB.  On Wednesday we will recognize Rowan’s Law day by wearing purple if you have it.  If not, please do not to worry.  We will find ways to include you on the day.  Rowan’s Law recognizes the importance of raising awareness about concussions and head trauma.  A bump to the head, big or small, is no laughing matter and we want to raise awareness of safety protocols and knowing it’s important to let someone know.  As well, we will be holding our Terry Fox Run with our students at the school on Wednesday, weather permitting.  Mrs. Hons’ grade 6 leaders have been planning a great event, and at last count, we have raised $233 towards our goal of $700 goal.  Thanks for your generous contributions.

On Thursday we will recognize Truth & Reconciliation Day by wearing orange if we have it, and by learning more about honouring the knowledge shared by our Indigenous ancestors and recognizing the steps we need to take to support our Indigenous community today.  Each class will be working on a school-wide display for our front lobby which reminds us that “Every Child Matters.”  Mrs. Woodland will be helping provide teachers with age-appropriate literature from our library and learning opportunities to learn more about the valuable steps we all must take to create a more inclusive and supportive Canada.

Thanks again to our community for all that you are doing to keep our school safe.  As you complete your daily screenings, please continue to follow all of the steps on the online process, especially surrounding siblings and other members of your household.  When in doubt, please reach out as we are here to help.

Enjoy a fantastic weekend and I look forward to another great week together.
