Updates For October 18-22, 2021

Posted October 21, 2021

Hello Alma families!  October is quickly flying by.  Thanks as always for doing your daily screening and also for reminding your children to follow the protocols at school for hand washing, distancing and masking as required.  Here are the 5 things you need to know this week:

  1. If you’ve missed out on attending our amazing School Council Meetings, we usually meet on the second Thursday of the month from 6:30-8:00 PM.  Typically we don’t meet in December, March and June.  Minutes from the meeting and updates can be found in the School Council section of our website.  If you’d like to be sent a link to our virtual meeting a day or two in advance, please email sc.alma.ugdsb.on.ca and we can add your email address to our mailing list.
  2. This year the school is once again hosting a virtual pumpkin carving contest.  As per my last email, due to the scheduling of other events at our school, we are not going to be having the traditional orange and black day for Hallowe’en but wanted to have a fun pumpkin carving event still.  You can read more about this great event here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/11-jzokhvBEjPg75xcXkC_J68RcG6CUDTG56Jvan81J4/edit?usp=sharing.  We have had a generous donation of a few extra pumpkins in case a family is in need of one.  If you are, please email the school at [email protected] and we can arrange to have you pick one up here on Monday, October 25.
  3. In case you missed it, individual student photos for Picture Day will be held on Thursday, October 28 before the PA Day on Friday, October 29 when teachers will be working on data collection and report card writing.  Please ensure that you’ve submitted your online orders with LifeTouch before picture day so that there’s nothing for your child to bring on the day but their smile.  If you do choose to bring in the order form, please ensure that you include the correct amount of cash or cheque to hand directly to the photographer.
  4. Our Student Council & Mrs. Scott are organizing their first event, which is Polka Dots, Stripes & Checks day on Monday, November 1, 2021.  Students are encouraged to wear their favourite type of patterned clothing as we seek to celebrate the unique parts of ourselves.  If you don’t have any patterns, do not worry!  Just come dressed as your comfy-cozy self.  You’re awesome just the way you are.  Weather permitting, we hope to hold a school-wide activity outside in the last block of the day, followed by a virtual reading by Mr. Boyce and an art project to create a new display in our front lobby.
  5. A few students have been asking about bringing items to school.  While we want to limit the number of extra items brought in by students to reduce the number of contact points between kids, we know that from time to time, bringing something to show your friends is a part of childhood.  Please remember, however, that if your child brings something to school like a toy, sports cards, Pokemon cards, etc., that there is no trading of items.  This helps to prevent the tears and misunderstandings that sometimes happen and also ensures that only items brought from a home are returned to it.  Thanks for reinforcing this with your child before they choose to bring a small item in to show their friends.

Have a great week everyone and thanks as always for your support!
