Updates For September 5-9, 2022

Posted September 9, 2022

Hello Alma Families!  It’s been a great first week with a lot of new connections, relationship building and adjusting to routines.  Both you, your child(ren) and our staff have done an amazing job of making the most of a very busy four day week.  I am so proud of everyone in our Alma PS family!  Here are the 5 things you need to know today to keep up to date this week:

  1. Thanks to families for returning your Freedom of Information and Plan of Care forms as required back to the school.  If you have not done so already, please return them to the school ASAP.

  1. The Terry Fox fundraising campaign will be starting up again on Monday, September 12th. Last year our wonderful community raised more than one thousand dollars for this iconic charity. We are once again asking for your support to raise funds to help those battling with cancer. You can donate online at the following site, https://schools.terryfox.ca/AlmaPSAlma. If you are choosing to donate, please encourage your child to give for the sole purpose of helping others in need. The actual Terry Fox Run will be held on Friday, September 23rd. More information about this event will be given closer to the date.

  1. If your child will be absent or there will be a change in pick up or drop off, please remember to call the school office at (519) 846-5110 and either leave a message or speak with Mrs. Driedger.  An alternative method is to email the school email at [email protected].  You can feel free to email or cc: the teacher as well but it is important to inform the office each time as well in case a staff member is absent.  As well, now that our students are getting used to routines, please remember to aim to drop off walking children at the sidewalks with our staff and supervisors and refrain from proceeding past the double lines on the kindergarten side of the building.  As all of the programming is going into full swing in our building next week, our parking lot will be busier with more staff cars so please ensure to “kiss and fly” with your child quickly to help ease congestion and promote the most safe drop off experience possible.
  2. The UGDSB has been planning for the UGDSB Counts census and it will be a great opportunity to better understand the population we serve and the needs which they have.  Information will be sent to families soon but to learn more about this initiative, you can read more here:  https://www.ugdsb.ca/board/ugdsb-counts-student-census-2022/.
  3. On Thursday, September 15 at 6:30 PM we will be hosting our first in-person School Council meeting of the year.  Generally we meet on the second Thursday of most months but this year we waited until school was a little more underway so we could have more answers to some of the questions that often come up this time of year.  If you were a part of the school council last year, you will remember that we have a separate email group for those who are interested.  If you were on it last year, we will add you to the list once again unless you let us know that you would like to be removed.  If you are new to the community or would like to join this year we welcome you with open arms!  Please email the school at [email protected] and we will gladly add you to the list.

On Monday, we will send out a form for people to nominate someone for our annual School Council Elections.  This year we will be seeking nominations for the position of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.  If you are choosing to nominate someone, please ensure that you have contacted them before nominating them to ensure that they would like to have their name stand. Those names will be gathered and confirmed next week and we will vote on them at the meeting on Thursday night.  As always, if you have questions, feel free to reach out to me at the school.  We look forward to an amazing year ahead!

Thanks as always for your continued support.  If there’s anything the school can do to help, please let us know.  We’re here to help!

Take care,

Jason Boyce
