April 4, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – More than 1,300 elementary students met at the University of Guelph on April 4 ready to start their Skills Canada challenges.

Every year, the UGDSB coordinates a regional Skills Canada competition for students in grades 4 to 8. This year’s competition saw the largest number of students from 57 elementary schools competing in different challenges.

Challenges at the event included Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Character Animation, TV/Video Production, Health and Safety, Design and Build, Construction, Green Energy and Vex Robotics.

The challenges students face during the day combine their knowledge of the science, technology, engineering and math curriculum. Furthermore, the challenges invite students to collaborate, problem solve, create and be innovative while participating in some friendly competition.

Students who place in the top three spots of each challenge will advance to the Provincial Skills competition.
