November 13, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – Two students at Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute have been named winners of an award from the National Centre for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT).

According to the NCWIT website, this award is given to women in grades 9 through 12 who are active and interested in computing and technology. The goal of the award is to encourage women to continue pursuing their passions.

Eshika is a grade 12 student at CCVI. She started taking an interest in computer programming in grade 10 when she took her first course. She has since been taking computer science and computer engineering courses at the school. According to her teacher, she is very bright and has an aptitude in both subject areas. Eshika volunteers her time at the CCVI “Chrome Depot,” where students come to have their Chromebooks repaired. Eshika is always willing to help her peers when their device “fails them.”

Sydney is also in grade 12 at the school and like Eshika, she began taking computer programming courses in grade 10. When she was in grade 11, she created a JavaScript version of the popular game “Shut the Box.”

Sydney has recently begun spending time teaching her peers in computer science about the Raspberry Pi microcomputer.

Congratulations Eshika and Sydney!
