GUELPH, Ontario – Centre Wellington District High School in Fergus is inviting students to attend a talk on climate change.

On Wed. October 28 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the CW Environmental Science Club will host world renowned polar bear researcher Dr. Andrew Derocher as he discusses polar bears in a changing climate.

Dr. Derocher is a professor of biological sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Over the last 30 years he has researched the ecology and conservation of polar bears. He has also researched other Arctic species such as wolves, caribou and grizzly bears. His current research looks at the effects of climate change on the polar bear population.

The big marine bear, living in a frozen world, has become the poster species for climate change. Researchers say that unlike other carnivores that have seen habitat loss in the last century, habitat loss for polar bears has only emerged as a threat as the climate has warmed.

Classes from other schools are welcome to attend the CWDHS event.
