GUELPH, Ontario – In just over a week, students from across the Upper Grand District School Board will head to the largest skilled trades competition in Canada.

From May 2 to 4, secondary students will compete at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC) at RIM Park in Waterloo.

OTSC boasts more than 2,000 competitors, 20,000 spectators and 67 contests ranging from robotics and graphic design, to cabinetmaking and carpentry.

The Upper Grand will be represented by students from Centre Dufferin DHS, Centre Wellington DHS, Erin DHS, John F. Ross CVI, Norwell DHS, Orangeville DSS, and Wellington Heights SS.

UGDSB students will compete in the following events: home and team building, robotics, architectural technology and design, automotive service technology, cabinetmaking, team and individual carpentry, computer aided manufacturing, electronics, graphic design, hairstyling, IT and network system administration, job interview, photography, precision machining, TV and video production, welding and workplace safety.

The competition is a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills to their friends, family and teachers, while gaining the attention of prospective employers.

Results will be announced during the closing ceremony on May 4. Winners at OTSC have the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition.

OTSC also features a Career Exploration Showcase, Young Women’s Conference and FNMI Conference. At the career fair, more than 70 businesses, colleges, apprenticeship programs, unions and government programs will provide information related to the skilled trades and technologies. The Young Women’s Conference offers female students the opportunity to explore careers in the skilled trades and meet with mentors. The FNMI Conference is an opportunity to celebrate the success and skill of First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth in the province.

OTSC is free to attend and open to the general public.

Good luck to all the competitors!
