Students give up field trips, electronics for Live Free Day

GUELPH, Ontario – Could you make it through the day without using your cellphone? Or spend the day without your favourite snack or video game?

On Friday, students in schools across the Upper Grand participated in Live Free Day, which encourages people to live without something they may take for granted in order to show support for those who live without every day.

Guelph’s Waverley Drive Public School held Live Free activities all week. Students signed pledge cards, declaring what they would go without. By Wednesday had already surpassed their fundraising goal of $700.

On Friday, grade 7 students Kyle, Ellie, Jessica and Yara gave up a field trip to Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox theatre for Live Free Day. They donated the money for the field trip to the school’s fundraiser and spent the morning making and serving popcorn to students enjoying Live Free presentations in the gym.

Other students pledged to live free of their electronics, candy, television, video games and more. Some students even pledged to give up talking for the day.

The Live Free campaign is organized by the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington. Money raised during the campaign goes to the charity’s Food and Friends program, which supports 105 student nutrition programs in Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph.

In Upper Grand schools, all money raised on Live Free Day supports the school’s nutrition program and helps local children live free from hunger.
