Upper Grand gears up for an Hour of Code

For Computer Science Education Week (December 8-14, 2014), a dozen or more UGDSB schools will be participating in the largest learning event in history, The Hour of Code. In this global movement tens of millions of students in over 180 countries participate.

The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer programming, designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics of code.

Classes in both elementary and secondary schools are participating. At Waverley Drive Public School in Guelph, students in Mrs. Millar’s and Mrs. Rourke’s Grade 4-5 classes are excited to be involved.

“We encourage students to think of things in their everyday life that use computer science, such as cell phones, microwaves and traffic lights,” said Mrs. Millar, “and to think of the various areas that computer scientists work.”

The Hour of Code is just the beginning step for students who wish to learn how technology works and how to create software applications.
