Westside hosting letter writing party to spread positive messages about mental health

For Immediate Release
April 15, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at Westside Secondary School are helping spread messages of hope around the world, hoping to reach out to someone who might be struggling with mental illness.

On Thursday April 21, the school is holding a letter writing party – crafting handwritten notes that will be sent around the world.

The event is part of the “With Love” initiative by Wear Your Label, a clothing company created to spark conversations about mental health. Rather than fear the labels that often define people, the company founders wanted to encourage individuals to take ownership over their mental wellness. Each order the company sends out is accompanied by a handwritten letter carrying a positive message.

The company has partnered with schools and mental health organizations to host “With Love” letter writing parties and Westside was chosen from a group of 200 applicants worldwide.

“Because there is such a stigma around mental health, people suffer in silence,” said Westside teacher and event organizer Stephanie McKay.

At the letter writing party, students, teachers and community members will write short, positive messages of postcards that will be sent around the world – something that can be both therapeutic for the letter writer and incredibly meaningful for the person who receives it.

“It is such an easy task that can have such a huge impact on another person’s day,” said McKay.
