Attendance area approved for new Orangeville elementary school

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
June 27, 2013

GUELPH, Ontario — The attendance area for a new elementary school to be constructed in the Settlers Creek area of Orangeville has been established.

The boundary for the new JK to Grade 8 regular track school, scheduled to open in September 2014, was approved by trustees at the regular board meeting on June 25, 2013.

The need for a new school in Orangeville was identified in the Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) Capital Plan. The 308 pupil place school, with a budgeted cost of $6.3 million, will be constructed at B Line (County Road 23) and Spencer Avenue. The architectural design allows for future expansion, if required.

The school boundary will be the same as the existing Settlers Creek Development Area (DA), plus property located east of B Line between Young Court and the Orangeville Caledon Townline. Clockwise, it runs along Riddell Road, the Townline, B Line, and back to Riddell taking in both sides of Alder Street and Colborne Crescent.

All JK-8 regular-track students residing within the new Settlers Creek school boundary will attend the new school in September 2014. This will include students entering Grade 8, reflecting the preference of a majority of Grade 6 parents who were surveyed in April.

Trustees also approved a recommendation to hold current East Garafraxa PS Grade 6 students (who reside within the Settlers Creek Development Area) at that school for Grade 7 in 2013-2014, instead of directing them to Montgomery Village PS. Classroom organizations for both schools will be reviewed early in September to accommodate this decision.

Since the 1998-99 school year elementary students in the Settlers Creek DA have been bused to East Garafraxa PS. In 2005 Grade 7/8 students from the DA were assigned to Montgomery Village PS, with an option for younger siblings. Construction of the new school was triggered by the planned implementation of Full Day Kindergarten at East Garafraxa and Montgomery Village in 2014-15, resulting in more overcrowding at both schools.

Increased enrolment due to FDK is also behind a plan to reassign grades 4-8 Gifted students at Princess Elizabeth PS to the new Settlers Creek school, where space will be available. An estimated 55 to 60 Gifted students from throughout Dufferin County and East Wellington will enjoy the new facility when it opens in 2014.
