Board Meeting Highlights for January 2020

For Immediate Release
January 29, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – The January meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on January 28, 2020. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

Naloxone Recommendation Report

At the January 2020 Board Meeting, trustees approved the implementation of Naloxone in UGDSB schools and board offices as part of first aid protocols, starting in the 2020-21 school year.

Following a June 2019 trustee motion, a staff Naloxone Committee was formed to examine the issue of adding Naloxone to school first aid procedures in the event of opioid overdose. The committee included senior administration, school administrators, Health and Safety, Mental Health and Addictions, Wellness, and Operations Department representation.

As outlined in the staff report, having Naloxone at schools is seen as a proactive measure and will provide an additional resource available to respond to an opioid-related overdose. If an opioid overdose is suspected, administration of Naloxone is an effective medication for temporarily reversing the effects of an overdose, and preventing death and harm associated with oxygen deprivation.  Naloxone will not cause harm to an individual if given in error, so long as it doesn’t delay appropriate response and care as noted above. The board’s implementation plan is cost effective and responsive to community needs and concerns.

The Concept Design Report includes the concept drawings, architect’s building program summary and architect’s construction cost estimate for this project, and the projected project expenditures budget.

Trustees approved the Concept Design Report for the New Guelph Secondary School building project, including the preliminary budget of $25,505,658.
