Board Meeting Highlights for March 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – The March meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on March 26, 2019. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

Junior Kindergarten French Immersion Application Update

Staff provided trustees with preliminary information on the number of applications received for Junior Kindergarten (JK) French Immersion (FI) for the 2019-20 school year. 

The Board approved JK FI caps for the 2019-20 school year in November 2018. The on-time application window for JK FI was from Jan. 8-18, 2019. During the on-time application window, 626 applications were received throughout the district for the 644 JK FI spaces available. Staff expect, as happens every year, that schools will continue to receive JK FI applications until the end of the current school year.

While there was an overall surplus of available JK FI spaces in the district, at the close of the on-time application window there was a shortfall of 66 spaces in six schools where on-time, in-area applications exceeded the JK FI caps. A random selection process was held to place applicants into JK FI spaces in those six schools. Any late applications will be considered only where spaces exists and if space does not exist, applicants may choose to be placed on a school-based waitlist.

Long-Term Accommodation Plan Annual Review Report

Staff presented the 2019 Long-Term Accommodation Plan (LTAP) Annual Review Report. The UGDSB LTAP was completed during the 2017-18 school year. The LTAP is a strategic review of the UGDSB’s facilities, population projections, and enrolment forecasts, and is an important step in ensuring alignment of school facilities with the needs of the board and the communities it serves. Each year, the LTAP is reviewed to ensure the priorities and timelines outlined in the LTAP remain appropriate. The annual LTAP report also contains information on the utilization of UGDSB schools, information on French Immersion enrolment, and information related to facility partnerships and co-build opportunities.

Policy Updates

Trustees approved the following revised board policy: Policy 409 Criminal Record Check/Offence Declaration.
