Board Meeting Highlights for October 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – The October meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on October 23, 2018. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

Mental Health and Addictions Update

Jenny Marino, the board’s Mental Health and Addictions Lead, provided trustees with an update on work currently underway including a number of community connections events, which are an opportunity for board staff to meet with community partners such as school police officers, local addictions services and family and children services. Additionally, Marino met with Student Senators earlier in the fall to hear student feedback on mental health resources. Training in suicide prevention and awareness continues to be offered throughout the board. Later this fall, UGDSB staff will hold a Mental Health Forum to serve as professional development for Health and Physical Education teachers and department staff. 

Renewal Projects 2018-19

Staff from the board’s Capital/Renewal group presented a report outlining the initial plan for Renewal Projects in 2018-19.

The Capital/Renewal group is responsible for planning and implementing all new schools, additions, major renovations, energy initiatives and equipment replacement projects in all UGDSB schools and administration buildings. Staff develops a five-year plan for utilizing renewal funds from the Ministry of Education. In the fall of each year, the renewal plan is reviewed and revised, and worked to implemented in the current school year is formalized so that design work can proceed.

More than 50 schools are scheduled to undergo renewal work this year. Projects include various upgrades to tech shops, computer labs and learning commons, roof, flooring and ceiling replacements, lighting and energy upgrades, and accessibility projects.

Trustees thanked staff for the diligent work they do in renewal each year, balancing numerous renewal priorities and keeping the board’s schools and facilities in great condition.

Policy Updates

Trustees approved the following policies: Policy 417 Violence in the Workplace and Policy 707 Reimbursement of Trustee Expenses. The following policies were received for information: Policy 111 Use of Corporate Resources for Elections, Policy 205 Volunteers, and Policy 408 Harassment in the Workplace.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held on Tues. November 27, 2018, at the Guelph Board Office, 500 Victoria Road North. Everyone is welcome to attend. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
