Bob Borden acclaimed for sixth term as chair of the Upper Grand District School Board

GUELPH, Ontario — Bob Borden, trustee representing Orangeville, was as acclaimed to his sixth term as Chair of the Upper Grand District School Board, at the board’s Inaugural Meeting held on Tuesday, December 1. Trustee Ralph Edwards, who represents the Townships of Guelph/Eramosa (Wards 3 and 4), the Town of Erin and the Township of Puslinch, was elected Vice Chair. Their terms of office run until December, 2010.

In his acclamation speech, Mr. Borden pledged to give his full dedication to the role and to represent trustees, students, parents and staff to the best of his ability. He highlighted some of the issues that face the board in the coming year leading up to the November 2010 municipal election, including projected enrolment decreases and the provincial deficit on board’s finances, resolution of the Central Guelph Accommodation Review and the relocation of the grade 7 and 8 French Immersion program, implementation of the Early Learning Program in September 2010, and the upcoming Operational Review to be conducted in the New Year by the Ministry of Education.

Trustee Edwards is a veteran trustee who has served the board as its Vice Chair for five years, and headed up many board committees and initiatives including the promotion of environmental education in Orangeville and Rockwood.

Trustees were also elected and acclaimed to serve as the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the board’s two Standing Committees:

Bob Borden is a retired elementary school principal (Peel District School Board), Founding Co-Chair (1998-99) of the Ontario Principals’ Council, President of the Peel Principals’ & Vice Principals’ Association(1996), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Public School Boards Association (2003 to present). 

Ralph Edwards was first elected to the board during the 2000 municipal election, shortly after retiring from the position as President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) District 18 Teachers’ Bargaining Unit. His teaching career included serving as a technical studies teacher at Guelph CVI and Centennial CVI.
