Borden and Busuttil to lead board

GUELPH, Ontario — Bob Borden, the trustee representing the town of Orangeville, and Linda Busuttil, trustee for Guelph Wards 1 and 5 have been elected Chair and Vice-chair of the Upper Grand District School Board for the term ending November 30, 2011. The election was held during the Annual Organization meeting held this evening (Tuesday, December 7, 2010).

Borden, a career educator, who has been a trustee for nine years, was re-elected to serve his seventh year as Chair. Throughout this time he has served as the board’s representative to the Board of Director’s of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), including being a member of the organization’s media violence task force. He began his teaching career in Peel elementary schools and retired from the position of principal in 2000. He is married to another retired teacher, Joan, and has two sons and daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.

Linda Busuttil was first elected to the board in 2006. She has chaired the board’s Business Operations Committee and served on several committees including the Special Education Advisory Committee and the Early Learning Steering Committee. She is trained in community development and works as a self-employed consultant throughout the province. Linda and her husband Ralf have three children who currently attend Upper Grand schools.

In his address to the board, Bob Borden highlighted some of the accomplishments of the system over the past four years including opening four new schools and strengthening relationships with local municipalities. He encouraged trustees to continue to work as a team to ensure support for a “student achievement culture” within the system while dealing with looming financial challenges.

The board’s Program Committee will be chaired by Guelph trustee Susan Moziar, with David Gohn of Centre Wellington acting as Vice-chair. Trustee Marty Fairbairn of Guelph and Puslinch Township, will chair the Business Operations Committee with Bruce Schieck of North Wellington, Minto and Mapletown serving as Vice-chair.
