Boundary Review process begins for new Shelburne school

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
January 25, 2012

GUELPH, Ontario – The attendance area for a new JK-8 elementary school to be built in Shelburne will be determined by a boundary review to be conducted over the next five months. Trustees of the Upper Grand District School Board voted to begin the process at their meeting on January 24.

The Board expects to construct the school on a Fiddle Park Lane site adjacent to the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex. While final approvals are to come, the board hopes to open the school in September 2013. Board staff worked with the Town of Shelburne, Shelburne District Agricultural Society and the Board of the Recreation Complex to secure the property.

A public meeting to present the concept designs for the new school has been scheduled for February 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Café at Centre Dufferin DHS.

The new school will relieve overcrowding at Hyland Heights Elementary School, which will be approximately 250 to 300 students over capacity as early as September 2012.

Overcrowding at Hyland Heights – which already has 8 portable classrooms – is due to increasing enrolment from new residential developments in the Shelburne area, and the implementation of Full Day Kindergarten (FDK).

FDK, a provincial initiative, is being phased in by the Board over five years. It began at Centennial Hylands E.S. in Shelburne last September, and will be launched at Hyland Heights in September 2012. Both schools will also receive about $1.8 million in renovations to improve kindergarten classrooms.

The primary objectives of the boundary review include the creation of sustainable JK-8 programs at Shelburne’s elementary schools, and to maximize the number of students who live within a safe walking distance to each school.

The boundary review will also consider an interim accommodation plan to address how students will be accommodated between 2012 and the new school opening.

The second report from the Boundary Review Committee will be distributed on May 8 2012, followed by a public information session in Shelburne on May 10.
