CCVI music program has busy spring with performances and competitions

April 24, 2023

GUELPH, ON – The Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute spARTanS Music Program has had a very busy spring.

Earlier this year, the spARTanS Marching Corps entertained a sold-out crowd at the Sleeman Centre on March 24th, 2023, as people watched the last regular season game for the Guelph Storm. Prior to the Guelph Storm game, the Spartans Drumline of the marching corps played in the Old Quebec Street mall while people were purchasing their tickets for the evening’s game.

On April 14th, 2023, Centennial CVI hosted the first Canadian Drumline Association Regional competition. This was an exciting opportunity for the school as it was the first competition since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The school hosted five drumlines from Colborne, Mississauga, Oakville and Guelph.  During this event, musicians marched and played while making visual shapes and movements.

The students from the spARTanS Music Program managed the day which included the technological needs, organizing and guiding each group, ran a barbecue, and hosted judges from the Canadian Drumline Association.  This was also the first time the spARTanS Marching Corps has competed in an indoor drumline competition.

Finishing 3rd with only a 10-point spread between them and a seasoned drumline in first place, the school is proud of how they competed. To get ready for this event, students trained through weekly rehearsals, including five weekend rehearsals. Placing 3rd was a huge accomplishment for this band because only 8 of the 27 students in the band had knowledge of playing the drums prior to the start of the school year.

The band would like to thank CCVI principal Joe Burns for his support, as well as Kristoffer Treiguts and Colleen Craig from the Athletic Department for lending the band their facilities.

The CCVI spARTanS Musicians are sponsored by the Upper Grand District School Board’s Specialist High Skills Major Program, which has supported them with training and instruments.

Congratulations to the students and staff involved with the spARTanS Music Program, we look forward to hearing what you have planned in the future.
