SHELBURNE, Ontario — Students from Centre Dufferin District High School are excelling at both ends of the academic spectrum.
In the arts, 28 junior and senior students recently participated in the 2012 Begbie Canadian History Contest, coached by teacher Neil Orford. Very high marks were awarded to Grade 11 student Shannon P. (91%), Grade 12 students Alexis L. (89%), Colton C. (83%) and J.D. Hallifax (83%).
In the sciences senior physics students took third among “8-person teams” competing in the University of Waterloo’s Sir Isaac Newton physics contest. Physics and science teacher Jeff Wellman was behind the effort.
“This is an international competition sponsored by the University of Waterloo and is notoriously difficult for high school students,” said CDDHS science head Steven Stewart.
“Jeff has been working hard in class and during extra help sessions all semester to prepare students for an overwhelmingly successful performance.”
Wellman credited the solid foundation students had received from Grade 11 physics teacher Rob Scott. CDDHS had nine students finish in the top 25% of all scores in the physics competition.
Approximately 1,300 students from secondary schools all across Canada participated in writing the Begbie Contest on April 18, 2012. Students from Eastern Canada wrote in the morning, while students from Ontario west wrote in the afternoon. The contest measures aptitude and critical analytical skills in historical document interpretation, written essay composition and general knowledge of Canadian History.
CDDHS students began preparing for the contest in February with regular lunchtime sessions, utilizing online tests and historical documents.
