Centennial Hylands ES celebrates 50th anniversary

May 22, 2018

SHELBURNE, Ontario – Centennial Hylands Elementary School celebrated its 50th anniversary this month.

Many former students and teachers were at the school on May 10 to talk about the early days of the school. Prior to 1968, Shelburne had one room school houses that served the region. In 1968 the last schoolhouse closed and Centennial Hylands ES opened.

The celebration featured photos and a video that was filmed in 1993 on the school’s 25th anniversary. Community members were invited to the school for a school tour, to play some recess games, get a photo with photo boards, try an escape room and visit the book fair.

Students were involved in the entire event including in the preparation of a presentation display that included historical documents and photos.

The event was a great success with former staff and students in attendance. Many people said it was great to see former students of the school attending the event with their children who are currently enrolled at the school.
