Centennial Hylands ES student participates in OLA Kids Committee

May 6, 2021

SHELBURNE, Ontario – Earlier this spring, The Ontario Library Association (OLA) hosted its annual Kids Committee where students are selected to participate in a day-long conference.

During the conference, students recommend and debate books, which will be put on the OLA Summer Reading List for students in Ontario.

Grade 6 student Brooke at Centennial Hylands Elementary School submitted her application to the program and was selected as one of the Ontario students who would attend the Kids Committee conference.

As part of being a committee participant, Brooke was to attend the conference with a list of some of the books she had recently read that were by Canadian authors and was to present these choices at the conference.

Brooke was part of the Silver Birch age group during the conference and all three of the books she presented to the Kids Committee were chosen to be part of the suggested summer reading list that will be released by the OLA at the end of May.

Brooke has participated in two of Centennial Hylands’ Forest of Reading programs, which sparked her interest to apply as a participant in the Kids Committee conference.

According to teacher-librarian Kristin MacDonald, Brooke worked really hard reading books and taking notes before coming up with her list to present to the committee. MacDonald said, “This has been a great experience for Brooke and we are so proud of her efforts and time she put into being part of this committee.”

Great job, Brooke. We can’t wait to read the OLA Summer Reading List at the end of the month.
