CHSS celebrates healthy eating through Garden of Eatin’ contest

November 15, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – This fall, College Heights Secondary School launched a new competition to promote healthy eating.

The Garden of Eatin’ contest was organized by Ms. Furfaro and the school’s Hospitality staff.

Each week, students are encouraged to take a picture of themselves enjoying fresh, health and nutritious foods from the CHSS Salad Bar. Students then fill out a ballot to be entered in a weekly draw for a free Salad Bar meal.

The initiative was made possible thanks to a grant the school received from Farm to Cafeteria Canada to implement a salad bar at the school.

As part of the grant, the school was also able to take students to Everdale Farm, near Hillsburgh, to harvest carrots. Ms. Furfaro said the students loved the experience and were able to take some of the carrots they harvested home with them. The trip also gave youth the chance to learn about taking care of the soil and the proper way to plant and care for carrots.

The contest will run until December.
