College Heights hosts All Candidates’ Election Debate

May 26, 2022

Engagement was high and the questions were incredible at College Heights Secondary School’s All Candidates’ Debate. The school organized the debate ahead of the Ontario Provincial Election on June 2, 2022.

All candidates running in the Guelph riding were invited to participate. The candidates who were able to attend were: Will Lomker (New Blue), James Parr (NDP), Raechelle Devereaux (Liberal), Mike Schreiner (Green), and Juanita Burnett (Communist).

The format of the debate allowed for each candidate to provide opening remarks and a closing statement. The showcase of the debate was the bulk of the time spent on candidates answering questions from CHSS students.

The questions from students covered a range of topics important to them including: increasing the minimum wage and its impact on education, access to healthy food, housing affordability, support for students who may ‘fall through the cracks’, the healthcare system, inflation, Transgender rights and gender affirming healthcare, and the opportunities for youth working in the green economy.

The candidates remarked at how engaged the students were, as a line of students stood to ask their questions.

Great job on a fantastic debate CHSS!
