College Heights SS launches pilot program for incoming grade 8 students

December 14, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – Earlier this year College Heights Secondary School launched a pilot program for grade 8 students who have shown a keen interest in studying at CHSS.

The idea of the program was to bring together a small group of grade 8 students who have shown interest in CHSS and allow them to get a more in-depth look at what a secondary education at the school would mean.

Twelve grade 8 students came together for three days at the school to learn about the hands-on opportunities available to them, build relationships with future grade 9 students and to reduce anxiety around the transition to high school.

Grade 8 students for this project were selected based on their interest in attending CHSS, family support, interest in heading toward college or an apprenticeship and an interest in math and science.

Over the course of the three days, students participated in team building activities and classes. Classes included theatre tech, welding, health care, bake shop, hospitality, science and more.

This project was organized for students by Lori Furfaro and Shelley Peterson from CHSS, as well as Christine Drumm, Catherine Andrews, Britni Murray and Anna Armstrong from the UGDSB grade 7/8 Guidance team.

Students immersed in this project had very positive things to say about the experience and are looking forward to starting their secondary school education at CHSS.
