September 18, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – A big purple flag if flying outside Guelph City Hall today – celebrating the importance of mentoring youth in the community.

Tuesday is Big Brothers Big Sisters Day. Dressed in purple, supporters from the UGDSB and WCDSB, municipal and provincial governments, volunteers, Big Brothers pair Mason and Nick, and more came to celebrate the organization and hear about the benefits of mentoring.

On Sept. 18, 2018, members of the community were at Guelph City Hall to raise a flag for Big Brothers Big Sisters Day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is a Federation working in more than 1,100 communities, providing life-changing experiences between adults and youth.

Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph (BBBSG) served 722 children in eight separate programs – 594 of those children are in school-based programs, operating out of 43 schools.

According to BBBSG, the in-school mentoring program “provides youth with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up within school grounds.” Through the positive friendship, mentors provide students with guidance, support and encouragement. BBBSG Executive Director Michael Treadgold said that the in-school programs make an enormous impact for our youth.

BBBSG is currently seeking mentors, as 137 children and youth are on their waiting list in the Guelph community.
