Connecting students to fresh, local food at ‘Challenge Your Taste Buds’ event
April 20, 2016
GUELPH, Ontario – College Heights SS students streamed into the school’s cafeteria Wednesday, trying out different dishes made from fresh, local ingredients.
The school hosted “Challenge Your Taste Buds” – a culinary event meant to introduce students to new foods as well as educate them on healthy eating.
Dishes ranged from potato and corn chowder and coleslaw to mini quiches and spanakopita. Fresh produce was also on hand. Students wandered from station to station, trying the different recipes free of charge. Recipe cards were also available to take home.
The event was hosted by teachers in the school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC). Students from the school’s hospitality, home economics, agriculture co-op and horticulture classes helped prepare the food.
The PLC group has been working with a focus on food literacy. In addition to “Challenge Your Taste Buds,” they are also planting gardens at the school, hoping to educate students on growing their own food, eating healthy and connecting students with fresh produce.
All of the recipes featured on Wednesday were from Foodland Ontario, who sponsored the event.
