CWDHS CyberTitan team heading to Nationals

February 18, 2020

FERGUS, Ontario – Students at Centre Wellington District High School are heading to the CyberTitan Canadian National Finals for the third consecutive year.

The CyberTitan program is available to secondary students and gives hands-on simulated environments that develop the critical and digital skills necessary for students to pursue post-secondary education in the cyber securities field.

In this competition students are given a virtual machine image. These images are broken, with improper settings and are installed with things that should not be there. Students are tasked with cleaning up the images in a timed setting.

The teams at CWDHS had to successfully complete several rounds of cybersecurity challenges in order to qualify for the Canadian National Finals.

The school’s four teams competed hard during the semi-final round in January and are pleased with their results.

Last year, the Terabytches, the school’s all female team, was the top female team in Canada. This year they beat their scores from last year. They are anxiously waiting to hear if they placed in this year’s competition.

The school’s junior team, Altron, finished first in Canada in the gold tier and 11th in the world out of over 1,800 teams in the gold (second) tier.  They came very close to getting an invitation to the national finals.

The second junior team at CWDHS, Ladz, had their strongest finish to date in the semi-finals, they finished in the top quarter of gold tier teams.

Kingsguard is the school’s co-ed senior team and is made mostly of students who competed on last year’s junior team. They finished in the top three in Canada in the semi-finals and are the team who will be representing the school at Nationals in Ottawa in May.

According to CWDHS teacher Tim King, “We’ve gone from 4 to 18 to 23 students (over 500% growth) in three years and our junior teams have consistently beaten our senior scores from the year before.”

Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s semi-finals and to the Kingsguard who will be representing CWDHS at Nationals!
