CWDHS student wins gold at Canada Winter Games

March 28, 2023

FERGUS, ON – Fifteen-year-old Madison M from Centre Wellington District High School recently competed at the Canada Winter Games in the para-Nordic cross-country skiing division.

This year’s Canada Winter games were held in Prince Edward Island between February 18 and March 5, 2023.

While participating in this year’s games Madison took home a gold and two silver medals for para-Nordic cross-country skiing. The silver medals were won in the 2.5km classic and 5km free-style and gold in the 1.2km sprint. These wins, although amazing on their own for Madison who is legally blind, were extra special because Madison is now the second winner of a gold medal from the Canada Winter Games in her family. In 1991, her father Matt brought home gold in men’s hockey.

When asked about her experience verse her father’s in ‘91, Madison said they were quite different because her father played right at the University of PEI whereas she competed about 30 minutes outside of Charlottetown. She, however, indicated that it was a special experience for her and her father as he went with her to the competition.

Training for such an event is no easy task. To prepare for the Canada Winter Games, Madison attended a National camp in Canmore, British Columbia, for a week in November. She also trains twice a week with her team in Orangeville and on her own at home 2-3 times per week. During competitions, Madison skis with her guide, Faith, who points out turns and obstacles along the way.

During her time in PEI, Madison mostly competed and trained for her events but did tour downtown Charlottetown.

Madison is currently training to increase her status on the National team and is working toward attending a world cup in the next year or two.

When asked if she had advice for anyone who is working towards a goal she said, “Just keep working towards your goals no matter what happens or what people say.”

Congratulations Madison on your wins at the Canada Winter Games, we wish you the best of luck in your future competitions.
