GUELPH, Ontario — Upper Grand District School Board students from developmental disability programs will be dancing up a tropical storm on Wednesday evening as they gather at Guelph Place for their third annual prom.

Over 125 tickets have been sold to students, teachers, educational assistants, principals, workers, parents and other chaperones. The theme for this year’s prom is “Tropical Nights”.

“The students all seem to enjoy themselves immensely,” said Lee Brooks, a teacher in the School, Community, Work, Transition Program at John F. Ross C.V.I., and organizer of the event.

“Everyone seems to really get into the spirit of prom,” said Brooks. “Some of them go all out with tuxes and formal wear. Others wear a suit and tie. This year we suggested to some students that a Hawaiian shirt would be nice. No matter how formal they choose to go the students always look great! Even the staff clean up nicely.”

Students will be coming to this year’s prom from John F. Ross C.V.I., Centennial C.V.I., Centre Wellington D.H.S. and Orangeville D.S.S. “We also have several students coming from the Catholic board this year,” noted Brooks.

At past events the music of Miley Cyrus and Disney’s High School Musical were popular. Scott Day is the prom’s D.J., and will be taking all the students’ requests.

“Scott volunteers his time to ensure that the students have a great time,” said Brooks.

The enthusiasm is infectious. “Everyone gets out on the dance floor. Students dancing with students from other high schools, students dancing with their E.A.s. Even principals and vice-principals get up on the dance floor.”

Brooks is modest about her own involvement in the prom. “Putting it together isn’t that hard,” she said. “We just book the hall, order the food and decorate. The night is a success because of the students’ enthusiasm and excitement. They make it what it is.”
