Edward Johnson Boundary Review nearing decision

GUELPH, Ontario — Ratification of the decision on a new boundary affecting French Immersion (FI) students who attend Guelph’s Edward Johnson Public School is slated for Tuesday January 24 at the regular monthly meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board.

After debating the boundary change at its Business Operations Committee, trustees agreed to send immersion students from east of Joes Baseline, mostly from Rockwood, Eden Mills and Everton, to the FI program offered at Brisbane and Erin Public Schools. Tytler area students will make the new King George Public School their home school.

Trustees considered concerns expressed by the families of these two groups of students and voted to implement plans to provide a two-year grace period (to 2014). Existing Tytler students and their siblings, if they choose, will be able to remain at Edward Johnson and then attend King George. Current FI students living east of Jones Baseline can obtain Out of Area status for King George for these two years before moving to the FI program in the Erin area. Grandfathering options will also be available for students currently in grade 5 from both groups which will allow them to graduate from Edward Johnson and then move on to John McCrae and eventually, John F. Ross CVI.

Trustees passed an amendment to the staff implementation plans which will provide the East Wellington students with bus transportation into the City for the two-year period.

The implementation of Full Day Kindergarten in Guelph schools and ensuring that FI school capacity on Guelph is available for City of Guelph students were components of the staff recommendations.

Parent delegations will be heard at the monthly Board Meeting in advance of the final vote on the decision on January 24.
