Elora PS creates art pieces for Green Legacy with the help of Vibe Arts

March 27, 2019

ELORA, Ontario – Students at Elora Public School have been hard at work creating art pieces as part of the Green Legacy Program.

The Green Legacy program started in 2004 as the idea to plant 150,000 trees to celebrate Canada 150. Since then, the idea has grown to over two million trees planted in Wellington County by community partners, making it the largest municipal tree-planting program in North America. Many UGDSB schools have worked with Green Legacy in our region.

Grade 5 and 6 students at Elora PS were commissioned by Green Legacy to create two art pieces for the program. As part of the deal, Green Legacy made contact with Vibe Arts in Toronto to help support and educate students during the art project.

Vibe Arts is a charitable organization committed to providing high quality community and school based arts education to children and youth in needing communities.

John Scott’s grade 5/6 class welcomed Meredith Blackmore and Meagan Mechler to work with their class. Two of the art pieces will be displayed in the Toronto Subway System and the third will be donated to the County of Wellington.

As part of the project, Scott’s class learned all about Green Legacy and incorporated this into their math lessons to talk about trees and the numbers that have been planted.
