Eramosa PS students spread kindness through out the school with ‘Shout-Out’ tickets

March 22, 2021

ROCKWOOD, Ontario – Students at Eramosa Public School have been busy spreading kindness to their peers this school year.

Starting in September, students in Nicole Lenselink-Crawford ‘s grade 6 class have been participating in Feel-Good Fridays in their classroom where students write down things through the week that they felt should be recognized at the end of the week.

The purpose of this activity was to encourage students to look for random acts of kindness, initiative skills and to build up their classrooms sense of community by saying nice things about each other.

Since returning from online learning earlier this year, Lenselink-Crawford challenged her class to see if they could make this idea into a safe school-wide event. As a class, they brainstormed different ideas – while keeping COVID protocols in mind – on how they could make this happen throughout the school.

After students were done brainstorming, Lenselink-Crawford brought the idea to the March staff meeting and this school-wide event took off.

The event was rolled out to the entire school through a series of announcement videos and posters created by Lenselink-Crawford’s class. Students also created an individualized “Shout-Out” box for each classroom where the students were welcome to share the moments they found throughout the week that they wanted to highlight.

A school-wide box was also created that sits near the office where students can recognize people from other classes. The goal is to do a weekly draw from each classroom’s box, which principal Paul Tribe will read on the morning announcements. The other shout-outs of the week are being shared with students by posting them throughout the hallways.

According to Lenselink-Crawford, “The goal [of this activity] was to create a safe school community event that recognizes some of the great things our students are doing each week.”
