F.A. Hamilton PS students organize school-wide kindness initiative

February 14, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – F.A. Hamilton Public School spent Valentine’s Day focusing on kindness and inclusion.

On February 14th, students in Mr. Devenny’s grade 4/5 class organized and led a school-wide kindness initiative. The project follows learning the students have been doing in class around anti-bullying measures in schools.

The idea for Friday’s project started with kids wanting to do additional work in anti-bullying education. They thought the best way to support anti-bullying work was to promote an environment that makes everyone in the school feel safe and included. And a great way to do that, they thought, is through showing and receiving kindness.

On Feb. 14, 2020, students at FA Hamilton PS participated in a kindness initiative.

Prior to Friday’s activities, the grade 4/5 class made up bulletin boards around the school and created a slideshow to play in the foyer. They also had daily announcements with challenges such as talking to someone who you don’t normally speak to, inviting a new person to play at recess, or tidying up in class without being asked.

On Friday, the grade 4/5 students led three activities for their fellow students: medal making in the library, cooperative games in the gym and a banner project.

The medal activity consisted of students making paper medals for someone in their life who they admire or love. The older students helped the little ones with decorating ideas and tying strings to their medals.

In the gym, students from Mr. Devenny’s class ran cooperative games using a giant parachute, showing the kids how to work together, and have a lot of fun while doing it.

In one of the school’s classrooms, the final activity was every student in the school adding to a large kindness banner that will be laminated and hung in the gym.

During each block of the day a different division of the school rotated through the activities, so every student in the school had the chance to participate.

Next week, some of the student organizers will present to School Council, letting parents know about the initiative.

Amazing work from everyone in Mr. Devenny’s class!
