Food4Kids providing nutritious food to students on weekends

April 24, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – A new volunteer-run program is helping provide students with nutritious food outside of school hours.

Food4Kids Guelph is a project of the four Rotary Clubs of Guelph. They joined forces to create a program that addresses food insecurity.

Many local children benefit from in-school nutrition programs, such as breakfasts, snacks and lunches provided at the school. However, for some families, access to food on the weekends and during school holidays becomes challenging. Local food banks, despite their best efforts, cannot always cover the gap.

Food4Kids was created to fill that gap on the weekends and holidays. A group of dedicated volunteers work together to secure donations, purchase food and pack individual food bags for children in schools in the UGDSB. On the last day of school before the weekend, the group delivers the food packs to students at their school.

The program has started as a pilot project with three UGDSB schools currently involved. The pilot runs from March to the end of June, with the hopes of starting back up again in September and expanding.

A number of local community partners are involved in the project, including Food4Kids Waterloo Wellington, the Rotary Clubs of Guelph, Guelph Community Health Centre’s “The SEED” project, and the Upper Grand DSB.
