GUELPH, Ontario — Students and staff are going wild over the $1,000 dollar grant they received from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada for their green initiatives in school.
Fred A. Hamilton Public School received this grant for their pollinator garden of native plants. The purpose of their pollinator garden is to plant and enhance sustainable pollinator habitats while creating a multi-sensory experience for students, their families, staff and their neighbouring community.
The students and staff have a lot of plans for the pollinator garden once the winter passes.
“We will be using the funds for soil, fertilizer, mulch and aim to plant four garden beds. An asparagus garden will be planted in one bed, and in the remaining three beds, a variety of native herbs will be planted,” said Fred A. Hamilton PS’ principal, Christine Labelle.
Once the garden begins to produce fruits and herbs, students and staff can participate in observation and data collection projects, such as monarch and bee tracking programs, as well as watching what birds the garden will attract.
Fred A. Hamilton PS is an Ontario Eco-School and an Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) Healthy School. Eco-Schools are schools that have received certification for environmental excellence and OPHEA are schools that have received certification to to promote and enhance the health and well-being of students, school staff, and the broader school community.
