Fred A. Hamilton PS student organizes coat drive for local organization

February 9, 2022

GUELPH, Ontario – Coats were spilling out the box at Fred A. Hamilton Public School’s coat drive last week.

Abby, a grade 6 student at Fred A. Hamilton PS, took it upon herself to organize a coat drive for her fellow classmates to participate in, creating flyers and announcements to spread the word around her school.

“Every winter I see people who don’t have coats and jackets. Every year, I’ve had a coat to keep me warm in the winter. I wanted to take on this project by myself to help people in our community and to use my leadership skills,” said Abby.

Abby chose Hope House – an organization that provides social assistance and programs to residents of Guelph and the surrounding areas – to donate to because it’s an organization she’s donated to in the past when she was a part of Girl Guides of Canada and has observed the work they’ve done in her community.

“I wanted to help the community that I live in to be healthier and a better environment. Hope House supports the local community to make it a better and safer place,” said Abby, “ “I want people to know that even if they are a kid, they can still do things to make the community a better, safer place. Anyone in the community can do something impactful for others.”

The students at Fred A. Hamilton PS ended up donating 54 coats and 5 snowsuits.
