GCVI class helps cleans Westwood’s gardens

November 17, 2022

GUELPH, ON – The gardens at Westwood Public School were plucked and pruned to perfection with the help of Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute’s Green Industries class.

Kay Elford – an elementary teacher at Westwood PS – noticed that the gardens at Westwood PS were overgrown and he just did not have the bodies or the resources to take up the task.

Elford was connected to GCVI’s Green Industries program, through his neighbour Lindsay Ackroyd, who was also a teacher at GCVI.

“She told me how beautiful the gardens were at GCVI. She put me in contact with Daniel Abdelmassih. Dan came out to take a look and see if it was a project his class could do. It was,” said Elford.

Elford said that Abdelmassih and the rest of his students in the Green Industries program were able to come over and work on Westwood’s gardens, working tirelessly to pull weeds and trim bushes in the cold and the rain.

“It was a fantastic day and we really appreciated the collaboration and their willingness to come to Westwood,” said Elford.

The Green Team at Westwood PS have plans to maintain the upkeep of the gardens.

A big thank you to Mr. Abdelmassih and his Green Industries’ students with all their help on Westwood’s gardens.
