GCVI hosting three-month virtual Terry Fox Run

June 29, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – Students and staff at Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute are gearing up to host a three-month virtual Terry Fox Run.

This three-month campaign is being led by four grade 11 IB students, Sanya, Vani, Kimberly and Kavya, with the support of IB teacher Angela Snell and GCVI vice principal Jeff Weddig.

Over the span of this campaign, students will be hosting a series of activities through social media. On July 1, the campaign will kick off with a photo contest that will ask GCVI students and staff to show their Canada Day spirit. At the end of this activity, a prize will be awarded to the most spirited.

Throughout the rest of the month of July, information about Terry Fox and the Terry Fox Foundation will be shared on social media. The purpose of this is to further raise awareness about Terry Fox and this campaign. Also, in July, the committee will host a virtual Terry Fox trivia event on social media that will have some prizes to be won.

In August, the committee has planned a Terry Fox Appreciation Week, where students and staff will be able to send in messages on what the Terry Fox run means to them. The goal of this event is to give students and staff the chance to share their own stories and connect with others who may have faced a similar experience. August will also feature a bake off, with all proceeds from the bake off being donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.

The campaign will come to its finish with the final event, the annual Terry Fox Run on September 30. The committee will be accepting donations for the whole three-month period and there will be many prizes to be won for those who participate in the social media activities.

Starting July 1 until September 30, students and staff are being asked to submit the number of kilometres they have walked, run, biked or rolled. At the end of the three months, the committee hopes that the number of kilometres reached equals the total distance that Terry Fox ran.

According to committee member Kavya, the purpose of running a three-month virtual campaign before the run is “not only to raise money and donate to cancer research but to come together to achieve a common goal despite all that is happening in our community today. … We also hope that through this campaign, we give students and staff a goal to strive towards during these difficult times.”

Great job GCVI, we look forward to seeing your photos on social media all summer.
