GCVI teams up with Out On The Shelf for Winter Arts Night
December 12, 2017
GUELPH, Ontario – Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute has teamed up with Out On The Shelf for their Winter Arts Night fundraiser. The fundraiser will take place at the school on December 21 with the doors opening at 6:00 p.m.
Out On The Shelf is a LGBTQ library and resource centre that provides a safe and inclusive space in Guelph.
As people gather for the performance there will be an art display, drama presentations and guitar performances starting at 6:00 p.m.
The formal part of the program will begin at 7:00 p.m., with performances from the GCVI Junior and Senior Symphonic Bands, Gael Force Stage Band and GCVI Chamber Choir. Special guest performers include the Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra.
This year, the school decided to combine its semester one arts night and the annual holiday concert to allow for a larger scale fundraiser. According to GCVI’s music department, “This evening will feature visual art, dramatic presentations, and music from over 300 GCVI arts students.”
GCVI decided to team up with Out On The Shelf for their Winter Arts Night Fundraiser because it is an organization that has touched the lives of many of the school’s arts students in some form. “In the spirit of the holiday season, we decided to choose a local charity that we could raise money for during this event. The students came up with a list of suggestions. Around the time we were picking a charity the Guelph Mercury Tribune ran an article about Out On The Shelf needing money to help keep them established in the downtown location. Many of our arts students spend time at Out On The Shelf, and we as a collective (GCVI arts teachers, students, and administration) decided this would be a great organization to work with on this project.”
Out On The Shelf representative, Emma, said, “Out On The Shelf is honoured to be the charity of choice for the GCVI Winter Arts Night. Currently, all funds raised will go towards supporting our operations as we grow in our new space in the old Acker’s building downtown. We have been Guelph’s LGBTQ+ resource centre and community hub for over a decade and look forward to expanding and being a part of this community for many more years to come with the help of our generous supporters.”
Donations will be accepted at the door with all proceeds from the concert going to support Out On The Shelf.
