GUELPH, Ontario – The Water Rockers, Grade 5 students at Kortright Hills Public School in Ms. Dykstra’s class, have recently been named the winners of a video challenge.
The Water Rockers class entered the national Canadian Geographic “Classroom Energy Diet Challenge” earlier this year.
The Classroom Energy Diet Challenge is a competition for Canadian classrooms that aims to increase energy awareness. This challenge runs between February and April.
As part of the challenge, the class completed all 16 challenges, which engaged the students in activities involving topics such as their carbon footprint, eco friendly transportation, gardening, energy conservation, reusing materials, the recycling process, phantom power, and their water footprint.
One of the challenges was for the students to create an original one-minute, eco-themed video and to post it for public voting. Two days before schools closed for March Break, the Water Rockers created and posted their Sustainability Rap video.
As a result of this contest, students tied for second place and won $1,000 for them to put toward their future Outdoor Classroom in the Kortright Hills schoolyard.
Way to go, Water Rockers!
