Grade 6 students at Alma PS put sewing skills to the test for charity blankets
April 20, 2018
ALMA, Ontario – Students in grade 6 at Alma Public School have been putting their sewing skills to the test as they create unique blankets for Wyndham House, an organization that works to end youth homelessness.
This project began with a group of ten grade 6 students that had participated in the #ONedSs chat through Twitter. The topic being discussed during the chat was human and children’s rights.
The #ONedSs chat saw participation from students throughout Ontario in grades 3 to 7. The goal of this chat was to get students thinking about the hard questions around human rights with the hope that these questions would start a discussion.
Following the chat, the grade 6 students at Alma PS decided they wanted to do something to make a difference in the community. In an effort to make sure everyone stays warm, the students set out to collect t-shirts as part of a school wide t-shirt drive. Once the students had collected hundreds of t-shirts, they got together to make the t-shirts into blankets.
Once all the blankets are completed, students and staff will deliver them to Wyndham House in Guelph.
Great job grade 6 students!
