Grade 7 and 8 students at Island Lake PS send letters of thanks to frontline workers

November 27, 2020

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – Grade 7 and 8 students in Stacey Manzerolle and Mardell Miller’s classrooms recently took part in an activity to thank the frontline workers who have been so dedicated to the Orangeville community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of their learning, these students looked at the language that makes a person a hero. As a class, they would focus on one individual and discuss if this person met the criteria of being a hero. Many groups discussed individuals like Malala Yousafzai and Terry Fox. One group decided to discuss frontline workers including paramedics, grocery staff, hospital staff and more.

Manzerolle and Miller wanted to make this an authentic learning task for students and therefore asked students to brainstorm ways in which they could appreciate these individuals. As a result of this brainstorming activity, the classes decided to make thank you cards.

Each student chose who they wanted to make their thank you card for and some students elected to make multiple thank you cards. Cards were made for and delivered to grocery clerks, mechanics, healthcare workers, first responders, crossing guards and teachers.

Students thanked these community members for their selfless acts during the pandemic and their continued work to keep the community safe.
