Grand Valley and District PS receives MusiCounts grant

May 5, 2021

GRAND VALLEY, Ontario – Grand Valley and District Public School has received a grant from the MusiCounts program to help the school purchase new instruments.

After sending in applications for the past three years, the school was chosen this year by MusiCounts to receive a sum of money for the purchase of musical instruments.

MusiCounts is a charitable organization that provides funding and music opportunities to Canadian schools and students through the BandAid program.

The MusiCounts BandAid program provides up to $15,000 worth of musical instruments, equipment and resources to any type of school music program. Funds are distributed in sums between $5,000 and $15,000.

The school was granted $12,000 through the program and intends to order a class set of djembes, a dun dun and djembe music book and ten xylophones. A djembe is a type of West African drum that is played with bare hands.  Instruments were specifically chosen for their sounds so that students with hearing and sensory sensitivities would feel more comfortable and be able to readily participate.

The school will be aided by principal Dan Ardis, who will show students how to use the djembes when they arrive.
