Inspired by conversations with students, CDDHS teacher publishes second adventure book

April 1, 2021

SHELBURNE, Ontario – Taking inspiration from conversations with students, a teacher at Centre Dufferin District High School has published a second book in his adventure series.

Runners of the Woods, by teacher and author Curtis Symons, is a follow up to his first novel, Freerunners.

The sequel features regular Canadian teenagers as the heroes, defending the planet against bizarre plant-like aliens.

Symons said that a few years ago he was having a conversation with students in his Grade 10 class. They were discussing one of the Hunger Games novels and some of the students said it bothered them that the book didn’t contain as much action as others in the series, and pointed out that “real teenagers swear.”

“I’d been playing with a novel idea for a while, and these comments kind of gave me a push to get it going,” said Symons.

Symons said he tried to capture a real Canadian flavour in the books, “in the geography, social fabric and humour.”
