Island Lake PS shares Winter Celebrations around the World showcase with students

December 10, 2020

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – During the winter months, many cultural festivals and holidays are celebrated around the world. In the spirit of celebrating all cultures, Island Lake Public School is celebrating light this holiday season.

Upon looking at the many festivals and holidays celebrated at this time of the year, Island Lake PS staff noticed they all have one thing in common, the theme of light. From lights on Christmas trees, to the flame on Diyas, to the candles in a Menorah, light is a common element that winter holidays and festivals share.

Over two weeks in December, students and staff at the school will be exploring the theme of light and showcasing a different winter celebration from around the world during morning announcements.

Some of the celebrations that the school will be learning about include Chinese New Year, Christmas, Diwali, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve, Ramadan, Three Kings Day and Winter Solstice or Yule.

Along with morning announcements, teachers are looking at connections with their students and sharing multicultural resources. Connections including discussing as a class the celebrations that students do each year at home.

At the end of the two-week learning period, the school is hosting three spirit days before the Winter Break where students and staff can dress in specific colours representing different celebrations.\
